I put together the press release for my exhibition last night. I always find this task one of the most daunting. I have soem sense of my sel as an artist when I am making my art, but to commit it to paper and speak about myself in the third person scares the crap out of me.

MEMBERS GALLERY EXHIBITION AT SCHOOL 33 ART CENTER

BALTIMORE, MD: Bridget Z. Sullivan is pleased to announce the opening reception of her solo exhibition in Baltimore, WATERSHED at School 33 Art Center, a project of the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts. An opening celebration takes place Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 2-4 PM. The exhibition runs from March 12 through April 11, 2009. School 33 Art Center is located at 1427 Light Street Baltimore, MD 21230. The gallery is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10am-4pm, with extended hours on Thursdays from 10am-7pm and Saturdays 12-4pm. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

Through close observation presented in a form reminiscent of a naturalist’s journal, the mixed media digital work of Bridget Z. Sullivan reveals the artist’s search for meaning through her observation of life. Sullivan provides her viewers with intimate views of Nature using photography and scanography. Using water based pastels she draws and writes directly on her large digital prints. She juxtaposes the images on the wall like a collection of insects and bones revealing Nature’s secrets and details for extended, personal scientific study. Our survival depends on our willingness to know, value and understand the yeomen of Nature who live out their lives filtering the bay, decomposing the forest, and providing oxygen and food for our nourishment. It is only through thoughtful and careful study that all integral parts of Nature reveal themselves.

A watershed provides a turning point, a place for filtration of matter and sediment resulting in clarified water. Sullivan’s work embodies a place for the collection of ideas and clarification of vision while recounting the significance of the minutiae. The hydrologic cycle is the cycle of life.

Sullivan received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 1987 and her MFA from Towson University in 1996. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions since 1986 and has most recently exhibited at the Load of Fun Gallery, Baltimore, MD; Greenbelt Art Center, Greenbelt, MD; and the WomanKraft Gallery, Tucson, Arizona. Sullivan was awarded a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist’s Grants in 2004 in Photography and in 2002 in the New Genre category. Her work has been featured in AfterImage:Inklight, and URHere Journal of Creative Geography. She currently resides in Baltimore, MD.

I just ordered another roll of Epson Ultra Smooth Fine Art paper for printing. $109.00 for 17″x50′. I get 15 – 39 x 13.25″ prints per roll. It is interesting to me how the media/materials impact the process. I have always found this aspect of technology facinating. For instance the 8.5 x 11″ page is directly related to the size of an average sheep skin (parchment). The Gutenberg  Bible was printed on parchment. Likewise our modern road width is directly related to the width of Roman roads (passable by 2 oxen pulling a cart). I have often thought of my minivan as an oxen cart.

• Epson 2200 printer – $700 purchased 2005 with MSAC grant award money

• 39 x 13.25 print materials cost
  $7.70 print (1/15th roll of paper) +  4.20 (1/15 th of cost of set of inks)
• Time to print out one 39 x 13.25 print  – 40 minutes
  NOTE: this does not include: image gathering, digital manipulation, test printing or handwork

I am preparing for  my upcoming exhibition at School 33 (3/12-4/11), and I have a few questions.

• I would like to prepare a press release.

Do you have a press release sample I can use in order to follow your format? I have one of my own, but I can use yours if you prefer.
Also do you have a current list of contacts you would like me to send the press releases to?

• I am preparing a postcard or brochure for the exhibition (I am getting estimates on this right now).

Do you have a mailing list I could use?
Can you tell me the number of addresses you have on your list?
Can you give me a sense of what it would cost to do a bulk mailing of your list?
If I were to pay for the mailing (provided I can afford it) would the School33 office be able to supply labels and assist me with the labeling?

• These are the dates I have tentatively set out for the exhibition. Do these work for you?

Install exhibition Saturday 3/7 and possibly 3/8 if required. Installation should only take 3-4 hours.
Opening reception 3-5 PM Saturday March 14
De-install exhibition 4/14.
